Cheddar Moon's title goes way back to my youth. Once, while walking outside, I looked up at the piece of fermented curd dangling in the night sky and thought: "It would be so cool to have a song named 'Cheddar Moon'." When this tune came along it dawned on me: this might just be the cheddar moon I was looking for all these years. This track, before being an independent piece, started as a bridge between the song Codswallop (an early version of Tumbleweed Drive) and a song named 'By the Blue Moon' that I was rehearsing with a band. My intention was to blend ingredients from both pieces. The opening riff and the bass movement were originally from the former. The main melody was based on a vocal line in the latter song. Furthermore I took the harmonic framework (the shifting between tonal centres Em and Bbm) from my piano piece 'Simple Waltz'. Add to that an ugly angular guitar solo and one gets: a Cheddar Moon.
